About us
DAB the EU is an innovative teaching and learning programme developed by college lecturers and secondary school teachers to engage students on active European citizenship. This is not a pro-European educational programme. It aims at providing the information and the tools to take ownership of those issues which affect our everyday life.
It fits fully in the relevant curriculums of the Junior and Senior Cycles. It also offers an innovative 8-week programme for Transition Years. The ethos of the DAB the EU programme is to develop students’ critical thinking on issues related to the European Union and Ireland’s role within it and to foster active European citizenship through different activities.
DAB the EU offers introductory videos, teaching slides, activities, and resources to ensure a teacher and student friendly experience.

Meet the team
Dr Emmanuelle Schon-Quinlivan is a senior lecturer in European politics in University College Cork. She is also the Director of the Hub in Active European Citizenship.
She is a member of the European Commission’s Advisory Board on the project “Enhancing Democratic Citizenship Education: Supporting Member States with Resources and Tools.” Her expertise in citizenship education at primary and post-primary level is widely recognised and has led to many Jean Monnet grants to develop practical educational tools based on critical pedagogy that work in the classroom at primary level with Key to the EU and at post-primary level with DABtheEU.
Dr. Philip Murphy is a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Government and Politics, University College Cork (UCC).
His research interests include political socialisation, political engagement, youth politics, and research methods. On DAB the EU, he focuses on citizens’ engagement with the EU. This includes how young people conceive of the EU and how it relates to their political identity.
He has focused on developing engaging and thought-provoking material at Transition Year level through an 8 week module which will get teachers and students talking, debating and acting upon.
Aoife Houlihan is a secondary teacher with 14 years teaching experience both abroad and in Ireland.
She is an English teacher and subject co-ordinator for CSPE in Kinsale Community school where she is focused on developing Global Citizenship Education across the curriculum.
She is collaborating on developing DAB the EU as much regarding its content as its workability in the class and its ease of use for teachers and students alike.
